Intrafamilial Child Abuse: Definitions of an Ambiguous Concept
Drawing on the French-language literature review "Intrafamilial Child Abuse" (ONPE, 2016), this article aims to shed light on the complexity of the concept of "intrafamilial abuse." Building on the definition proposed by the World Health Organization on the prevention of child abuse in 1999, a review of references published after 2000 on the main scientific portals and journals in the field was conducted using keyword searches. The analysis highlighted the vague and ambiguous nature of the concept of intrafamilial abuse and the absence of a universally accepted definition, both in research and in field practice. Analysis of the resulting corpus identified two main approaches to understanding the subject of study. The first, known as the categorical approach, classifies and defines instances of abuse. The second, comprehensive approach, offers a relational interpretation of instances of abuse. In conclusion, the authors emphasize how the imprecise contours of this subject call for caution when addressing it and demonstrate the value of combining approaches from different disciplines to consider it in its entirety, thereby fostering multidisciplinary dialogue.
