This literature review highlights the fact that those close to people with disabilities generally express support for their right to a fulfilling sex life. Furthermore, it is noted that the sexual autonomy of people with intellectual disabilities is limited, and professionals and parents appear to exert significant control over their sexuality. This monitoring can lead individuals to conceal a sexual life that might otherwise exist. People with intellectual disabilities are more frequently victims of sexual abuse and lack knowledge of best practices for a fulfilling and safe sex life.
