Incidence of radiation dermatitis following interventional radiology procedures. Results of a feasibility study among French dermatologists who are members of the French Society of Dermatology

Introduction: Several cases of radiation dermatitis following interventional radiology procedures were observed—almost exclusively by dermatologists—between 1992 and 2000, with very few reported recently, raising questions about the persistence of this side effect. Objective and study design: A feasibility study to confirm the existence of cases of radiation dermatitis secondary to interventional radiology procedures from 2003 to 2004. Methods: A questionnaire was sent to the 1,450 members of the French Society of Dermatology during the summer of 2004, asking them to report any cases of radiation dermatitis secondary to an interventional radiology procedure. Cases diagnosed between September 1, 2003, and August 31, 2004, were included. Results: Two hundred eighteen responses were received. Ten cases of radiation dermatitis were reported. The median age at diagnosis was 56 years. In one case, the procedure was neuroradiological; in one case, interventional cholangiography; in one case, pacemaker implantation; and in seven cases, interventional cardiology. The median time between the interventional radiology procedure and the first symptom was 2 months, and the median time between the procedure and the diagnosis of radiation dermatitis was 7.5 months. In two cases, plastic surgery was required. Conclusion: Radiation dermatitis is a complication that is consistently observed following an interventional radiology procedure. This study supports the implementation of a reporting system for this side effect. This work is part of an effort to optimize interventional radiology practices, aiming to reduce radiation dose while maintaining the same quality of examination. (R.A.)
