How can we support the loved ones of people with Alzheimer's?

This article presents the results of an evaluation of an educational program designed for caregivers of patients with Alzheimer's disease. A guidance kit for caregivers—consisting of a slideshow to support family group meetings, a facilitator’s guide, and booklets for caregivers—was developed and tested in two geriatric centers during educational sessions designed to combine formal information with opportunities for participants to share their experiences. Preliminary results from this six-session program (understanding the disease, strengthening social support, recognizing the impact of caring for a loved one on the caregiver, learning to cope with behavioral disturbances, learning to communicate, and learning to stimulate the patient) show improved coping and reduced psychological distress.
