Housing: A Key Determinant of Health Under the Control of Cities.
Even though cities do not have full authority to influence the health of their residents, they do have the means to improve housing conditions—a key determinant of health that is closely linked to the socioeconomic circumstances of the population. Cities must adopt a cross-sectoral approach by bringing together their departments and healthcare professionals, as well as builders and landlords. Many municipalities have already embarked on this path. Local elected officials must receive training to implement housing policies that improve residents’ health, emphasizes Laurent El Ghozi, a physician and elected official in Nanterre, in the Hauts-de-Seine department.
