Help with job coding: the CAPS tool

Introduction: Job coding is essential for studying occupational risks at the population level or for standardizing job data for comparison purposes. Objective: To present the Computer-Assisted Coding of Occupations and Economic Sectors (CAPS) application, a tool designed to assist with job coding during the collection of data on occupations and economic sectors. Method: The search engine developed manages all the information available in the paper versions of the classifications and searches for exact titles based on those entered. Additional terms are also included to optimize the search. Results: The CAPS tool allows for the coding of occupations according to several versions of the French Nomenclature of Occupations and Socio-Professional Categories (PCS) and according to the International Classification of Occupations (ISCO). Economic sectors can be coded according to several versions of the French Nomenclature of Economic Activities (NAF) and the International Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities (ISIC). CAPS provides a list of codes from the selected classification, ranked by relevance after a job title is entered. Users can then view the description associated with a code and access corresponding codes in other classifications. The tool is a free web application. Conclusion: CAPS is a user-friendly and scalable tool that can easily integrate new classifications or file updates. Furthermore, it can be interfaced with any other application where job titles are entered, thereby offering a preselection of codes. CAPS could thus provide valuable assistance in collecting employment data within the framework of the DMST. (R.A.)
