The health of immigrants: a political issue.
Contrary to popular belief, there are hardly any specific health conditions linked to immigration anymore. The health of immigrants is, in fact—just like that of native-born citizens—merely a product of their social circumstances, and in particular of the inequalities they face. This highlights the contradiction inherent in combining a restrictive immigration policy with a generous healthcare policy. In this “Point of View” article, Didier Fassin, a professor at the University of Paris-Nord and the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, discusses the financial, health, and human costs of what he considers a schizophrenic approach.
