Description and Incidence of Emergency Department Visits Due to Sports Injuries in France. Continuous Survey on Accidents in Daily Life, 2004–2005
Regular physical and sports activity (PSA) is encouraged, but studies on the resulting injuries are rare. Data from 2004 and 2005 from the Continuous Survey on Accidents in Daily Life (Epac) were analyzed to describe injuries occurring during PPA. Epac is a comprehensive, ongoing database of accidents in daily life reported to the emergency departments of approximately ten hospitals in France. The incidence rate of team sports accidents was estimated at 15.1 per 1,000 people, 22.0 per 1,000 men, and 8.6 per 1,000 women, representing more than 900,000 accidents each year in France. The most common (43%) are team sports injuries, particularly soccer among men (70%). The activities identified as the most dangerous are winter sports and horseback riding, with numerous fractures (29% each) and a high hospitalization rate (16% and 17%, respectively). The EPAC analysis provided a description of sports-related accidents and demonstrated that they are numerous and sometimes severe. Specific studies by sport type and quantification of the number of deaths and individuals with serious sequelae remain to be conducted. (R.A.)
