Physical activity among people receiving treatment for type 2 diabetes living in France: Breakdown by domain and determinants (ENTRED 2007–2010).

Objective - This study describes the physical activity (PA) of adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D), as its characteristics are poorly understood and have never been described in France. Patients and methods - We administered the long version of the "International Physical Activity Questionnaire" by telephone to T2D adults from the 2007–2010 ENTRED study living in mainland France who agreed to be recontacted (n = 917, 65% men, 62 ± 10 years, BMI 29 ± 5 kg/m², HbA1c 7.1 ± 1.1%). We investigated the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics associated with 3 PA categories (1: low; 2: at least 150 minutes per week of at least moderate PA; 3: high, at least 3,000 MET-min/week of at least moderate PA or 1,500 MET-min/week of vigorous PA). Results - The median total PA was 2,079 [Q1 = 892; Q3 = 3,915] MET-min/week. PA was primarily domestic (630 [Q1 = 90; Q3 = 1,740] MET-min/week) regardless of age, sex, or cardiovascular complications, followed by leisure activities (347 [Q1 = 0; Q3 = 1,028] MET-min/week) and then transportation (198 [Q1 = 0; Q3 = 495] MET-min/week). The medians and interquartile ranges for occupational PA were 0 because 65% of the population was unemployed. Categories 1, 2, and 3 corresponded to 16%, 51%, and 33% of participants, respectively. In multivariate analysis (reference category 1), perceived health status as "good" was associated with categories 2 (OR = 1.70 [1.01–2.89]) and 3 (OR = 2.12 [1.18–3.83]); age < 65 years (OR = 2.28 [1.30–4.01]) and the absence of cardiovascular complications (OR = 1.87 [1.01–3.47]) with category 3. Conclusion - This initial analysis, in which the home environment is the major contributor to total PA among people with T2D living in France, highlights the importance of a detailed assessment of PA and the promotion of leisure-time PA. Perceived health status, which is strongly associated with PA, prompts further investigation into links with quality of life to identify barriers to PA.
