Epidemiology of Type 1 Diabetes and Its Complications
Epidemiology of diabetes and its complications. The prevalence of type 1 diabetes in adults is estimated to be between 0.3% and 0.5%, accounting for 10% of all cases of diabetes. Among children under 15 in France, the incidence of type 1 diabetes was 18 per 100,000 during the 2013–2015 period (based on the national health data system), corresponding to a prevalence of approximately 1.3 per 1,000. The incidence of diabetes in young people is increasing by 3 to 4% per year, a trend observed in France since 1988. With intensified treatment (resulting in an average HbA1c of around 8% over the entire follow-up period), after 30 years of diabetes progression (in patients with an average age of 50), the following frequencies were observed: severe retinopathy (requiring laser treatment) in nearly 15%, microalbuminuria in 15%, macroproteinuria in 4%, advanced renal failure in less than 2%, clinical neuropathy in 24%, and macrovascular complications in approximately 5%.
