Outbreaks of nosocomial pertussis, France, 2008–2010.

This study reviews pertussis outbreaks reported by healthcare facilities in France from 2008 to 2010 and compares them with those reported during the period from 2000 to 2007. From 2008 to 2010, 89 pertussis outbreaks were reported. The trend in the annual number of reports, which was higher than that of the 2000–2007 period, mirrored the trend in the number of pediatric cases reported by the Renacoq hospital network, with a peak identified in 2009. The recommendations updated in 2008 were largely followed, indicating an improvement in the management of these outbreaks. However, healthcare staff remained the most common source of transmission. Managing these outbreaks continued to place a sustained burden on the teams responsible for containing them. Diagnostic confirmation remained limited. The reimbursement of PCR testing by the health insurance system, effective since March 15, 2011, should address this challenge and, combined with improved vaccination coverage among staff, enable better control of these pertussis outbreaks in healthcare facilities.
