Initial estimate of the impact of the heat wave on mortality during the summer of 2006, France.

Introduction - In July 2006, France experienced a heat wave that affected many regions across the country. Monitoring its health impact in real time remains difficult and is limited to specific conditions. Materials and Methods - We conducted a retrospective study to estimate the number of excess deaths from all causes that occurred during the heat wave. This period was defined based on biometeorological indicators developed within the framework of the Heat Wave and Health Alert System (SACS). Results - Thus, in mainland France from July 11 to 28, approximately 1,600 additional deaths compared to previous years were observed; with the most affected age group being those over 75 years old, who experienced a 10% excess mortality rate. Conclusion - Despite the preventive measures outlined in the National Heat Wave Plan, the impact of heat waves remains significant and requires the continuation of efforts already underway. (R.A.)
