Initial performance indicators for the colorectal cancer screening program (participation, non-analysable tests, positive tests). Trends since 2010 and a focus on the COVID-19 years 2020–2021 in France
The organized colorectal cancer screening program (DOCCR) was rolled out nationwide in France in 2008–2009. Testing for occult blood in stool allows for the detection and treatment of early-stage lesions. The objective of this article is to describe the program’s initial performance indicators for the 2020–2021 period, marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, along with trends since 2010. Calculated annually using data from regional cancer screening coordination centers, the participation rate is the ratio of the number of people who underwent a screening test to the eligible population. The proportion of people with an unanalyzed test that was not retaken is the ratio of the number of people whose last test performed in the year was unanalyzed to the number of people who underwent a screening test. Finally, the proportion of people with a positive test result is the ratio of the number of people who took a test with a positive result to the number of people who took an analyzable test. For the 2020–2021 period, marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, the participation rate in the DOCCR program reached 34.6% nationally. The proportion of non-analyzable tests that were not retaken is 3.5%, and the proportion of positive tests is 3.6%. The health crisis linked to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021 does not appear to have had a significant impact on participation in the DOCCR program at the national level.
