Estimated coverage rate for colorectal cancer screening in France in 2022
In France, participation in the National Organized Colorectal Cancer Screening Program (PNDOCCR) is low, falling short of European recommendations. At the same time, endoscopic screening is commonly performed, ensuring that a certain number of people are covered by a colorectal cancer (CRC) screening modality. Data from the National Health Data System (SNDS) make it possible to count and characterize individuals who have undergone a fecal immunochemical test (FIT) or a colorectal endoscopy. The objective of this study was to estimate CRC screening coverage rates among men and women aged 50 to 74 for the year 2022. Nationally, the coverage rate was 47.8%, higher among women. It increased with age and varied by region. The majority (58.4%) of those covered had undergone a FIT within the past two years, with significant regional variations: in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, nearly two out of three covered individuals had undergone a FIT, whereas in Corsica, this proportion was only one-third. Nationally, the proportion of people covered by a colorectal endoscopy (without a recent FIT) was 41.6%. It was approximately one-third in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, Normandy, and Réunion, and approximately two-thirds in French Guiana and Corsica. While participation rates in the PNDOCCR are published annually by Santé publique France, this study highlights the value of also regularly publishing coverage rates, which better reflect the reality of CRC screening in our country.
