In France, between 2003 and 2006, 56 botulism outbreaks involving 96 patients were reported. Type B botulism was the most common (79% of the 68 confirmed cases). The source of the botulism was identified in 16 outbreaks. Homemade or artisanal ham was implicated in 11 type B outbreaks, a family-run deli in four outbreaks (three type B and one type A), and an industrial sausage in a triple type B outbreak. Botulism remains a rare disease in France, occurring primarily as isolated cases or small family outbreaks, and has shown a declining trend in recent years. However, unusual forms, such as three cases of infant botulism (two type B and one type A) as well as two cases of type B botulism among drug users, have been identified, underscoring the need for careful surveillance of this disease.
