Exceeding the guidelines for safer alcohol consumption in 2020: results from the Santé publique France Health Barometer
Introduction - In France, new alcohol consumption guidelines aimed at reducing health risks were proposed in 2017. The objective of this study was to estimate the proportion of adults exceeding these guidelines in 2020, to describe this population, and to examine socioeconomic disparities in alcohol consumption based on this indicator, by gender. Method - The data used come from the 2020 Santé publique France Health Barometer, a telephone survey of a random sample of the adult population residing in metropolitan France, conducted between January and March, and then between June and July 2020, among 14,873 individuals. Results - In 2020, 23.7% of the population aged 18 to 75 exceeded the alcohol consumption guidelines. This risky drinking was more common among men (33.5% of them) than among women (14.9%). The proportion of people exceeding the guidelines did not change significantly between 2017 and 2020. Among those exceeding the guidelines, 47.7% had no formal education or a high school diploma or lower. All other factors being equal, women with higher education, unemployed men, and individuals (both men and women) with high incomes were more likely to exceed the guidelines. Conclusion - These results enable better targeting of prevention efforts, taking into account social inequalities in health.
