Alcohol Use Among Young People: Significant Increases in Occasional Drinking.

Alcohol consumption among 15- to 30-year-olds is characterized by relatively infrequent daily drinking (2.5% of this population), but higher rates of heavy episodic drinking (25.5%) and drunkenness (38.6%) than among older adults. Although the majority of young people consume alcohol without any particular risk, excessive drinking appears to be on the rise compared to 2005, for both boys and girls. While these behaviors remain more common among males, a narrowing of the gender gap is observed, with young women in particular exhibiting a pattern characterized by infrequent drinking but more widespread episodes of intoxication.[author’s summary]
