Status of Leptospirosis in Réunion. Epidemiological Update as of February 14, 2017.

Summary

Despite high rainfall during the 2016 southern summer, as in 2015, the number of leptospirosis cases in Réunion remained stable at a lower level than in previous years. Agricultural, recreational, and occupational activities are the main sources of infection. For the second consecutive year, there has been a decrease in waterborne infections. Occupational infections accounted for nearly a quarter of cases in 2016.

Simply applying personal protective measures during gardening activities (wearing boots, gloves, and long clothing) could significantly reduce the incidence of leptospirosis in Réunion and prevent deaths.
