Public Health Surveillance in the Grand Est Region. Epidemiological Update as of December 22, 2016.

Key Points

Gastroenteritis Surveillance

  • Gastroenteritis activity in the Grand Est region remains higher than what was observed in previous years during the same period, both in emergency departments and among SOS Médecins associations.

  • During week 50 (December 12–18), emergency department activity for this condition increased, while activity at SOS Médecins fluctuated.

  • High activity is also observed according to data from the Sentinelles Network.

  • Surveillance in senior care facilities: 11 clusters of acute gastroenteritis cases have been reported since the December 8 update, for a total of 46 episodes since the start of surveillance.

Bronchiolitis surveillance

  • In week 50 (December 12–18), bronchiolitis-related activity among children under 2 years of age continued to rise in emergency departments and fluctuated among SOS Médecins associations.

  • The Grand Est region entered the epidemic phase in week 47. In week 50, all metropolitan regions are in the epidemic phase.

  • According to data from the virology laboratories at the Nancy and Strasbourg University Hospitals, the circulation of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) continues to increase in the region.

Influenza Surveillance

  • In week 50, a clear increase in influenza-related activity was observed for both data sources.

  • Five severe cases of influenza have been reported by intensive care units in the Grand Est region since November 1.

  • Since September 1, 2016, 15 clusters of acute respiratory infections in elderly care facilities have been reported.

Mortality Surveillance

  • According to available data, mortality across all age groups and among people aged 75 and older observed in recent weeks is consistent with seasonal norms.
