Health Surveillance in the Grand Est Region. Epidemiological Update as of January 5, 2017.

Key Points

Surveillance of Gastroenteritis

  • Activity related to gastroenteritis in emergency departments in the Grand Est region remains higher than what was observed in previous years during the same period.

  • During week 52 (December 26 to January 1), activity in emergency departments and at SOS Médecins clinics for this condition decreased slightly.

  • However, an increase in activity is observed according to data from the Sentinelles Network.

  • Surveillance in senior care facilities: 13 clusters of acute gastroenteritis cases have been reported since the December 8 update, for a total of 59 episodes since the start of surveillance

Bronchiolitis surveillance

  • In week 52, activity related to bronchiolitis among children under 2 years of age has decreased slightly in emergency departments and among SOS Médecins associations.

  • The Grand Est region entered the epidemic phase in week 47. In week 52, all metropolitan regions remain in the epidemic phase.

  • According to data from the virology laboratories at the Nancy and Strasbourg University Hospitals, the circulation of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) continues to increase in the region

Influenza Surveillance

  • In week 52, a clear increase in influenza-related activity was observed for both data sources.

  • The Grand Est region is in the epidemic phase

  • Forty-eight severe cases of influenza have been reported by intensive care units in the Grand Est region since the December 8 update.

  • Since September 1, 2016, 39 clusters of acute respiratory infections in elderly care facilities have been reported

Mortality surveillance

  • According to data available as of January 3, a significant increase in mortality across all age groups was observed in week 50 (December 12–18), and mortality was near the threshold in week 51 (December 19–25)
