Key Points

In 2024, among the general population, the prevalence of suicidal thoughts in the past 12 months among those aged 18–79 was estimated at 6.2%. It was 5.2% for reported suicide attempts in a lifetime and 0.5% for reported suicide attempts in the past 12 months.

In 2024, 6,958 emergency department visits for self-harm were recorded, representing 5.1‰ of total activity, stable compared to 2023 (+3%).

In 2024, 7,051 hospitalizations due to self-harm were recorded, representing a standardized rate of 128 hospitalizations per 100,000 inhabitants, a decrease compared to 2023 (-6%).
Among women, the 11–24 age group continued to have the highest hospitalization rate for self-harm in 2024, particularly among girls aged 11 to 17, with 663 hospitalizations per 100,000 inhabitants.
Drug overdose was the method used in 76% of hospital stays and was the most common method regardless of gender.

In 2023, 739 suicide deaths were recorded, corresponding to a standardized rate of 13 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, stable compared to 2022 (-1%).
Men aged 45 and older continued to have the highest suicide death rates in 2023, with a death rate of 29 per 100,000 inhabitants among those aged 45–64 and 35 per 100,000 inhabitants among those aged 65 and older.
The most frequently recorded method of suicide on death certificates was hanging (49%). Methods differed between men and women, with violent methods predominating among men (hanging and use of firearms) and drug overdose followed by hanging among women.

From June to December 2024, 3114, the national suicide prevention hotline, received 14,545 calls from the region.
In 2024, one center comprising three branches participated in the VigilanS system for follow-up and monitoring to prevent repeat suicide attempts in the region, and 3,839 people were enrolled in this system.
