2022 National Prevalence Survey of Healthcare-Associated Infections and Antimicrobial Therapy in Healthcare Facilities: Investigator’s Guide
Building on previous national prevalence surveys (NPS) of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and antimicrobial therapy (AMT) in healthcare facilities (HCFs) (1996, 2001, 2006, 2012, and 2017), the 2022 NPS represents a key milestone in the surveillance and prevention of healthcare-associated infections, antibiotic resistance, and the appropriate use of antibiotics. The ENP 2022 aims to produce baseline data at the national and regional levels, in the form of indicators on the prevalence of healthcare-associated infections and anti-infective treatments in HCFs, to guide and evaluate national and regional policies. It also contributes to providing European data by transmitting a portion of the data to the ECDC. Furthermore, it seeks to raise awareness and mobilize all professionals involved in the prevention and control of healthcare-associated infections and the appropriate use of anti-infective agents. This survey thus provides insights for improving the measures to be implemented in their facilities to prevent healthcare-associated infection risks. This guide, intended for ENP surveyors in healthcare facilities, outlines: the methodological changes in this survey for the year 2022, focusing on new variables related in particular to COVID-19 and changes regarding the collection of data on the susceptibility of microorganisms isolated from infections to certain antibiotics. However, the questionnaires have been streamlined to select variables that strictly align with the objectives of the prevalence survey; the organization of the survey in terms of healthcare facility participation, data collection and entry, and the composition and distribution of roles within the team responsible for the survey at the facilities. A new PrevIAS application dedicated to prevalence surveys of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and antimicrobial treatments is made available to healthcare facilities for data entry and the generation of results in the form of an automated report. As in 2017, this survey is open to all volunteer healthcare facilities; however, a representative sample of French facilities will be specifically targeted; the definition of variables and their coding for completing the facility and patient questionnaires. The definitions of nosocomial infections and the list of anti-infective treatments have been updated for the purposes of this survey. The quality of the indicators produced as part of this survey depends largely on participation and the quality of the data collected by the facilities.
