Ev@lutil Database. Assessment of occupational exposure to fibers

Evalutil is a database on occupational exposure to asbestos and man-made mineral fibers (MMFs) that can be accessed directly online. Its purpose is to assist professionals in the fields of occupational safety and public health, including occupational physicians, safety engineers, members of health and safety committees, researchers, and others. Evalutil consists of three databases: two documentary databases—one on asbestos fibers and the other on AMFs—and an occupation-exposure matrix focusing solely on asbestos. The metrological and descriptive data compiled in the documentary databases are drawn from scientific literature and technical reports from prevention organizations and industry. The job-exposure matrix provides, for a given job, information on asbestos exposure as assessed by experts. Since 1992, Evalutil has undergone continuous development in terms of both content and format. Each database contains more than 1,800 metrological data points. The occupation-exposure matrix, for its part, provides information on asbestos exposure for more than 10,000 occupation-period combinations. Since 2001, Evalutil has been freely available online, primarily through the websites of Isped (www.isped.u-bordeaux2.fr) and InVS (www.invs.sante.fr). Although the information provided by the databases pertains to specific situations, it offers very useful insights and helps raise awareness of the risks associated with certain work environments. However, this information cannot replace the analysis of each specific situation by professionals. Indeed, a given measurement may be associated with multiple operations or a work area encompassing several activities. In the coming years, Evalutil is set to expand: updating existing databases, making the job-exposure matrices for FMA available for consultation, and improving the web interface to facilitate wider use.
