Suicidal Behavior in the Hauts-de-France Region. 2023 Report.

In 2023, 9,159 emergency room visits due to suicide attempts were recorded in the region, an increase compared to 2022 (+6.0%). Nearly two out of every three emergency room visits involved women (62.5%), and among them, the most represented age groups were those aged 25–44 and 45–64.
In 2023, 14,599 hospitalizations for self-inflicted injury (HGAI) were recorded, representing a standardized rate of 240 hospitalizations per 100,000 inhabitants (+7.1% compared to 2022). The Hauts-de-France region had the highest HGAI rate in France. Nearly two out of three HGAI cases involved women (61.7%), and among them, the highest rates were observed among those aged 11–17 and 18–24.
In 2021, nearly 880 suicide deaths were recorded, corresponding to a standardized rate of 15 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants (-5.0% compared to 2020). The Hauts-de-France region ranked 5th among French regions in terms of suicide mortality. Nearly 4 out of 5 deaths involved men (78.4%). Among them, those aged 65 and older and those aged 45–64 were the age groups with the highest rates.
