Health Surveillance in French Guiana. Bulletin dated July 2, 2026.

Key Points 

Dengue 

  • Dengue activity has been low over the past two weeks, consistent with levels typically observed during the inter-epidemic period.

Chikungunya

  • Since the detection of the first confirmed case of chikungunya in late January, 1,003 cases have been biologically confirmed in French Guiana. The West Coast and Savanes sectors are experiencing an epidemic (since S16 and S23, respectively), Cayenne Island is in the phase of sporadic outbreaks (since S18), the Maroni sector is in the sporadic transmission phase (since S11), and the Interior, Eastern Interior, and Oyapock sectors are under epidemiological surveillance.

Malaria

  • The number of malaria cases reported in the territory was low and showed a slight decrease over the past two weeks, with 3 cases recorded (2 in S25 and 1 in S26, provisional data) compared to a total of 6 in S23 and S24. Of these 3 cases, all caused by P. vivax, 2 were relapses. Since the beginning of the year, 128 cases of malaria have been reported, including 15 in April, 20 in May, and 9 in June. Over the past three months, most infections have occurred in gold-mining areas in the Savanes sector.

Bronchiolitis

  • Activity related to bronchiolitis was high in hospitals, and the majority of cases were identified as respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). The outbreak continues.

Flu-like illness

  • Influenza activity was low across the territory. Influenza B is currently circulating.

COVID-19

  • Despite a slight resurgence, SARS-CoV-2 activity remained low.

Diarrhea

  • Diarrhea activity was moderate in the region.
