Asthma Health Monitoring - Back-to-School 2019. Weekly Update, September 10, 2019.

In week 36 (September 2–8, 2019),

  • nationwide, during the first week of school, there was a sharp increase in emergency room visits and calls to SOS Médecins for asthma compared to the previous week (up 85% and 42%, respectively), and the proportion of hospitalizations following an asthma-related visit rose from 21% to 28%. The overall activity levels were slightly lower than those observed in the previous two years.

  • In the Indian Ocean, for the third week of school, emergency department visits for asthma among children are stable compared to week 35 and account for 7.4% of total activity. These figures are slightly higher than those observed at the start of the 2017–2018 school year. The proportion of hospitalizations following a visit has dropped to 23.4%.
