Hepatitis A in France. Epidemiological data for 2010.

In 2010, 1,244 cases of hepatitis A were reported (1,219 in mainland France, 25 in the overseas departments). For mainland France, the annual incidence rate of reported cases was 1.97 per 100,000.

The year 2010 was marked by a national hepatitis A outbreak linked to the consumption of sun-dried tomatoes (BEH No. 13-14). The metropolitan departments with the highest incidence rates for 2010, Yonne and Haute-Marne, experienced clusters of cases among populations living in temporary camps for travelers under poor sanitary conditions.
As in previous years, annual incidence rates in 2010 were generally higher among men than among women and among those under 15 than in other age groups.
The two main risk exposures in the 2 to 6 weeks preceding the onset of the disease were the presence of hepatitis A cases among close contacts (46%), with 78% of these cases occurring within the immediate family, and a stay outside mainland France (30%). Among the cases that had traveled outside mainland France, nearly half (42%) had visited one of the Maghreb countries.
In 2010, 33% of reported cases were part of a cluster of cases investigated by the Regional Health Agencies.
