Status of Acute Gastroenteritis in Mayotte. Epidemiological Update as of October 7, 2014.
Analysis of the Epidemiological Situation
An outbreak of gastroenteritis has been detected in Mayotte since early August, with a peak in week 33 (August 11–17) for visits by all age groups to the CHM Emergency Department and for children under 5 at sentinel network physicians. This resurgence in the number of cases occurred earlier this year than during the 2012 outbreak. In pharmacies within the sentinel network, the peak occurred 15 days later (August 25–31). To date, the number of gastroenteritis cases has decreased significantly. A return to levels close to the usual seasonal values has been observed for the three monitored indicators. The analyses conducted have identified rotavirus in the majority of cases. Strain typing is currently underway to compare the strains circulating in Mayotte and Réunion, where an epidemic is still ongoing.
