Background

The first cases of human leptospirosis in Mayotte were reported in 1998 to the National Reference Center (CNR) for Leptospirosis. In 2008, a specific epidemiological surveillance system for leptospirosis was established. All confirmed cases (by RT-PCR) diagnosed by the laboratory at the Mayotte Hospital Center (CHM) or by serology at the Cerba laboratory are reported to the health surveillance and emergency platform of the Indian Ocean Health Agency (ARS-OI). Each case is investigated to describe the cases, the determinants of the disease, and the evolution of the epidemiological situation. This section presents the results of this surveillance system for the year 2012, based on data from the CNR since 2003 and from the specific surveillance system since 2008.
