Influenza Surveillance in Réunion. Epidemiological Update as of June 30, 2014.
Epidemiological Situation
The seasonal flu epidemic, which began in late May, continues to spread in Réunion. The number of visits for flu-like symptoms at sentinel clinics and emergency departments continues to rise, exceeding the averages of the past four years. Additionally, 16 patients have been hospitalized in intensive care for the flu since the start of the year, three of whom have died. Finally, the number of identified viruses is increasing, with virus B being the predominant strain. During this seasonal flu epidemic and given the rise in the number of patients hospitalized in intensive care, it is important to remind the public that flu vaccination is the only way for vulnerable individuals to protect themselves against complications and severe forms of the disease, and that hygiene measures must be followed to limit the spread of the virus.
