Epidemiological surveillance of leptospirosis in Réunion. Update as of December 12, 2013.
Every year, during the southern summer, there is a surge in leptospirosis infections on Réunion. The first months of the year feature temperature and rainfall conditions that are particularly conducive to the survival of leptospires in the environment. In 2002 and 2003, the Regional Health Observatory (ORS) of Réunion conducted surveys in hospitals to study the determinants of this disease. Then, in 2004, a long-term surveillance system was established by the Cire OI, based on case reporting by physicians and medical analysis and laboratory facilities on the island of Réunion, covering both outpatient and inpatient settings. This epidemiological report presents the results of this surveillance system for the first 11 months of 2013, based on surveillance data from 2004 onwards, supplemented by the results of the ORS surveys from 2002 and 2003.
