Epidemiological Situation

Since the beginning of 2018, 1,816 biologically confirmed or probable cases of dengue have been reported by private and hospital laboratories in Réunion. The only serotype identified in 2018 is DENV-2 (540 genotypes). This situation follows an unusual low-level viral circulation during 2017, when persistent transmission was observed during the southern winter. Starting in week S2018-04, the number of cases has continued to rise.

In week S2018-16 (April 16–22):

• 428 biologically confirmed or probable dengue cases were reported by private and hospital laboratories in Réunion.

• The reported cases were mainly located in: - In the west: St-Paul, Gare routière, and Etang (74 cases), Bois de Nèfles and La Plaine (69 cases), St-Gilles-les-Bains (30 cases), St-Gilles-les-Hauts (14 cases), La Saline (8 cases), La Possession (35 cases), Le Port (54 cases), St-Leu (29 cases), - In the south: St-Pierre (23 cases), Ravine des Cabris (15 cases), - In the north: Ste-Clotilde (2 cases).

• Cases have also been identified in Ste-Marie, St-Denis / La Montagne and Ste Clotilde, St Leu / La Chaloupe, Trois Bassins, l'Entre-deux, l'Etang Salé, les Avirons, Petite Ile, St-Joseph / Les Lianes, and Vincendo. Ongoing investigations will help identify their presumed place of infection.
