Key Points

In 2024, the prevalence of suicidal thoughts in the past 12 months among 18- to 79-year-olds was estimated at 4.9%. It was 5.7% for reported suicide attempts in a lifetime and 0.7% for reported suicide attempts in the past 12 months.

In 2024, 8,415 emergency department visits for self-harm were recorded, representing 4.8‰ of total activity.
Two out of every three emergency department visits for self-harm involved a woman.
The highest proportion of cases involving self-harm was observed among girls aged 11–17; it nearly doubled between 2020 and 2024.

In 2024, 7,408 hospitalizations for self-harm were recorded (+6%), representing a standardized rate of 122 hospitalizations per 100,000 inhabitants.
Two out of every three hospitalizations for self-harm involved a woman.
Among women, the 11–24 age group still had the highest hospitalization rate for self-harm in 2024, particularly among girls aged 11–17, with 474 hospitalizations per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by those aged 18–24, with 396 per 100,000 inhabitants. Among girls and women aged 11 to 24, the rates observed between 2021 and 2024 continued to rise.
Drug overdose was the method used in 80% of hospitalizations and was the most common method regardless of gender.

In 2023, 842 deaths by suicide were recorded, corresponding to a standardized rate (method) of 13 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, stable compared to 2022 (-1%).
Three out of four suicide deaths involved men.
The highest suicide death rates were among men aged 65 and older (37 per 100,000 men) and those aged 45–64 (30 per 100,000 men).
Although the figures are significantly lower, the suicide death rate has been rising since 2020 among young women aged 18 to 24. This trend will need to be confirmed in the coming years.
