Measles Surveillance in the Occitanie Region. Epidemiological Update as of May 9, 2019.

Key Points

With 953 reported cases of measles, the measles virus continues to circulate actively in France, with an average of 70 cases per week. Thirty-one percent (299 cases) of patients were hospitalized, and 8% (75 cases) experienced complications, including 2 cases of encephalitis and 1 death. In Occitanie, a certain stability has been observed since week 10 (weeks 17 and 18 not yet consolidated).

In Occitanie: 252 cases since January 2019, or 33 new cases since the last update, representing more than one-quarter of the cases reported in France during this period.

  • 12 of the 13 affected departments. Among them, 3 departments are primarily affected: Aude, Haute-Garonne, and Pyrénées-Orientales.

  • In total, 73 cases were hospitalized and 37 developed complications (including 24 cases of pneumonia and 1 case of encephalitis).

  • 25% of cases occurred in clusters (schools, traveling communities, daycare centers, etc.).

  • Vaccination coverage is insufficient to prevent any epidemic risk in Occitanie: 63–82% with two doses by age 24 months, depending on the department (target: 95% to eliminate the disease).

  • The number of new cases diagnosed in emergency departments remains high in week 18 (14 cases), with a peak in week 17 at 24 cases.
