Seasonal Flu - Summary of the 2014–2015 Season in FranceThe flu outbreak was severe this season, characterized by 9 weeks of widespread transmission, 2.9 million doctor visits for flu-like symptoms, and 55% of cases caused by the A(H3N2) virus.The impact of this outbreak has been significant. Nearly 30,000 emergency room visits for influenza were recorded; among these, 3,133 hospitalizations were reported, 47% of which involved individuals aged 65 and older, and 1,558 severe cases of influenza were admitted to intensive care.In addition, an excess of 18,300 deaths from all causes during the flu epidemic was observed, 90% of which occurred among people aged 65 and older. This excess mortality is linked to the flu and other winter-related factors. An excess of 90,000 deaths was also observed in 13 of the 15 countries participating in the European winter mortality surveillance. Vaccination coverage continues to decline among at-risk populations, with 53% of at-risk individuals unvaccinated against influenza.
