Public Health Surveillance in the Aquitaine Region. Epidemiological Update as of February 26, 2015.
Mortality: The rise in mortality recorded since early January continued in week 7 and primarily affects older adults. This increase is observed across all regions. Nationally, since the start of the year, a preliminary estimate of winter mortality across all age groups shows that it is estimated to be 17% higher than expected mortality (compared to 2% during the 2013–14 season, and +10% and +12% during the 2012-13 and 2011-13 seasons, when a marked increase in mortality was also observed). These initial assessments should be treated with caution, as the current episode is not yet over and the data are not yet consolidated due to the usual delays in data transmission.
Emergency department visits by vulnerable populationsAccording to available data, emergency department activity among vulnerable populations (under 1 year of age and 75 years and older) is declining.
Reportable Diseases (MDO)No unusual situation this week.
Acute gastroenteritis (AGE)Moderate activity in Aquitaine as well as in France (below epidemic thresholds).
Influenza and influenza-like illnessesIn Aquitaine, activity has decreased, with 19.9% of cases attributed to influenza according to SOS Médecins (compared to 24.6% in Week 7) and stabilization according to Oscour® (1.7%), as of February 25, 2015, 73 severe cases of influenza in intensive care compared to 54 on 02/19/2015, as well as ten new outbreaks of acute respiratory infections in nursing homes.
Bronchiolitis: Moderate to low activity, below expected levels for this time of year. The number of cases handled by the AquiRespi network has decreased, with 73 cases during the last shift.
Respiratory virology and enterovirus meningitis: Significant circulation of seasonal respiratory viruses according to Bordeaux University Hospital, notably influenza A (54%) and influenza B (12%)
