Heat Waves and Health in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. Bulletin dated July 2, 2025.
Key Points
According to Météo France, “this Wednesday, the Yonne department remains under a red heat wave alert, while the other departments in the region are under an orange heat wave alert. The afternoon is expected to mark the peak of this heat wave. A cooling trend is expected Wednesday evening as westerly winds blow away the hot air that has built up over the past few days. The heatwave alert will end on Wednesday at 10 p.m. in western Burgundy, while in the east and in Franche-Comté, the night from Wednesday to Thursday is expected to remain fairly warm. In these departments, the heatwave alert will end on Thursday at 6 a.m.”
A regional analysis of emergency care utilization indicates an increase in the composite health indicator iCanicule (which includes hyperthermia, dehydration, and hyponatremia) since the start of the heatwave (compared to June… which was also a period of rising iCanicule values). This trend falls within the expected fluctuations for the current weather conditions and is observable across the region as a whole.
Heat poses a health risk to the entire population. The observed health impacts underscore the importance of implementing preventive measures to mitigate the effects of heat.
