Development of chlordecone prevention messages: implementation of a participatory approach

As part of the Chlordecone IV Plan, Santé publique France is responsible for developing recommendations to help the public reduce their dietary exposure to chlordecone. Since 2020, Santé publique France has been bringing together key stakeholders on this issue. The working group identified existing prevention initiatives and messages, along with their evaluations. Potential barriers to behavioral change aimed at reducing exposure to chlordecone were listed. These barriers include, in particular: denial, fatalism, and distrust of government messaging. Santé publique France commissioned a behavioral science institute to conduct a comprehensive review of the determinants of trust in public health recommendations. The aim was also to assess the value of co-creation mechanisms for these recommendations. A qualitative study of the general population was conducted by a national institute in collaboration with a local team. The goal was to test existing messages; identify trusted messengers; and explore the co-creation of messages. The findings from these studies will guide the next phase of the work, which is scheduled for completion in 2023.
