Every year, 30% of children under the age of 2 contract bronchiolitis, and between 2 and 6 million people are affected by seasonal flu. However, simple precautions can help reduce the spread of winter illnesses (flu, colds, stomach flu, bronchitis, bronchiolitis, etc.).
Did you know that 2 out of 10 people don’t wash their hands every time after using the restroom? And that only 42% of people cover their mouths with their elbows or a tissue when they cough or sneeze? That is why the Directorate General for Health, the National Health Insurance, Santé Publique France, and the Regional Health Agencies would like to remind everyone of the proper precautions to take for a #VirusFreeWinter.
What are the "barrier" measures that help protect us against winter viruses?
When and how should you wash your hands properly?
Why should you avoid touching your face?
What should you do when you’re sick to avoid infecting those around you?
These questions will be answered throughout the winter via a communication initiative that complements the seasonal flu vaccination campaign led by the Health Insurance Agency. It includes, in particular, the sharing on social media of an animated video, infographics, and specific recommendations on the 7 preventive measures:
Step 1: Wash your hands with soap and water or, if that’s not possible, with hand sanitizer;
Measure 2: Cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing;
Step 3: Blow your nose into a disposable tissue;
Measure 4: Avoid touching your face, especially your nose and mouth;
And when you are sick:
Step 5: Stay home, limit outings, and contact your doctor if necessary;
Step 6: Limit direct and indirect contact (via objects);
Step 7: Wear a mask, especially when in contact with vulnerable people.
These 7 steps form our protective shield against winter viruses.
