From strategy in all policy areas to the national health strategy.

The 8th WHO Global Conference on Health Promotion was recently held in Helsinki from June 10 to 14. The central theme of this conference was “Health in All Policies.” A broader perspective has indeed become essential to address the challenges ahead of us, particularly the significant burden of noncommunicable diseases on overall disease burden. The burden of noncommunicable diseases is by far the highest and weighs heavily on the loss of healthy life years, premature deaths, the health system, and GDP. For example, noncommunicable diseases accounted for 87% of deaths in France in 2010 (WHO Noncommunicable Diseases Country Profiles 2011). Four factors are the major causes of noncommunicable diseases (tobacco, alcohol, poor nutrition, and physical inactivity), with mental health and strong social factors playing a significant role in the background.[article excerpt]
