The Role of Substitution Treatments in the Recovery Process of People with Substance Use Disorders
This article explores the role of substitution treatment (ST) in the life trajectories of individuals who have stopped using drugs at least once, based on the results of a questionnaire survey addressing various aspects of their lives. A total of 341 individuals were interviewed through addiction treatment facilities and self-help groups. We focus on those (N=203) who have used BHD or methadone daily at some point in their lives. Four groups can be distinguished based on how they exited substance use: those in abstinence, those “still on OST,” those who have switched to another substance, and those who have not yet exited. Analysis of the characteristics of the individuals involved, their sense of having quit, and their definition of quitting reveals ambivalent views regarding the role of OMT in overcoming addiction.
