Heat Wave and Health Alert System. National Update as of July 30, 2019.
Key Points
The heat wave began on July 21; 80 departments were under an orange heat wave alert (85% of the population), including 20 under a red alert from 4:00 p.m. on July 24 to 6:00 a.m. on July 26 (35% of the population).
More than 2,500 emergency room visits and over 850 SOS Médecins consultations related to the heatwave were recorded between July 23 and July 29. The number of emergency care visits rose, peaking on July 25 (nearly 700 emergency room visits compared to 450 the previous day) and has been declining since. These cases were primarily due to hyperthermia and heatstroke.
The Hauts-de-France and Île-de-France regions, both fully subject to the red alert, showed a particularly sharp increase in the iCanicule indicator for July 25.
One workplace death possibly related to the heat was reported to Public Health by the occupational health inspection service.
