Human Botulism in France, 2007–2009

In France, 22 confirmed botulism outbreaks involving 45 people were identified, and 2 outbreaks (2 cases) were clinically suspected during the 2007–2009 period. Most cases were type B botulism (31 cases), with fewer cases of type A (8 cases) or type E (3 cases). The most severe cases were caused by toxinotype A. The source of botulism was food-borne in 89% of cases, with the exception of 4 cases of infant botulism and one case of botulism resulting from accidental injury. Foodborne origin was identified in 7 outbreaks (ham in 4 outbreaks, wild boar terrine, homemade pumpkin jam, and a commercial "enchiladas" product) and strongly suspected in 2 others (wild boar terrine and vacuum-packed smoked fish). Although rare, botulism is still present in France in unusual and severe forms that justify continued surveillance. (R.A.)
