The French government decided to develop a battery of indicators in order to monitor at a national scale the state of health of the population. Since its creation in 1998, the Department of Occupational Health (DST) of the French Institute for Public Health Surveillance (InVS) has developed several health surveillance programs aimed at producing regularly data about occupational risks in the French population. During the last years, different data sources have been established, and in 2009 the DST set up an occupational health indicators program. These indicators are established using several different data sources, and will be regularly available on the InVS" website (www.invs.sante.fr). This is the first report of this series. It is devoted to the risks induced by the occupational exposure to asbestos fibres. In this document, we report data on exposure to asbestos and its evolution over time in different populations (men, women, employed and retirees). Data on the impact of asbestos exposure on the population's health are also gathered according to age, occupation and economic sectors: pleural mesothelioma incidence and mortality, attributable fractions of mesothelioma and lung cancer, respiratory diseases. Some indicators of post-retirement surveillance of workers exposed to asbestos and of compensation are also presented. Finally, important aspects deserving more in depth studies are listed.(R.A.)
